More and more is being written about older children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and this week, we are releasing a systematic review by Dove et al. (doi: 10.1542/peds.2012-0683) of medications used to treat ASD in this older age group. As you might imagine, the number of studies that provided evidence for or against various medications was small. I prescribe that you read this interesting review article so you are up to speed regarding what the literature does or doesn’t tell us about drugs that parents of your patients with ASD may ask you about.
