Acutely Managing Well-Child Care

Our Quality Reports Editor Dr. Alex Kemper offers the following preview of what’s being published in the newest section of our journal:

On most Fridays, I practice in an acute care clinic within one of our large pediatric practices. Often we see patients who are due (and sometimes way overdue) for preventive services. It can be challenging to figure out how to catch these children up within the constraints of our clinic, including a limited number of rooms, a full schedule, and incredibly busy nurses. Patterson et al. (doi: 10.1542/peds.2012-0355) present a quality-improvement project to increase delivery of preventive services by converting acute care visits to well-child visits. This was possible in part by the addition of nurse practitioners, which was covered by the enhanced revenue. This project is compelling, but I think it would be hard to pull this off in our clinic. Perhaps I am being too resistant to change. After all, the project did improve quality and was sustainable. Let me know what you think!Digg this
