We have certainly been wary of sexting behaviors in our adolescent patients, worried that this type of behavior might carry from the virtual world of messaging into real world sexually risky behaviors. Our worries are well-founded based on the results of a disturbing but very important study done by Rice et al. (doi: 10.1542/peds.2012-0021). The investigators sampled more than 1,800 Los Angeles high school students and looked at the strength of the association between sexting and sexual risk-taking. This is one study to share with your local high school leaders, who might want to add the dangers of sexting to their health education curriculum if they haven’t already.
