Should We Pull the Plug on Electronic Cigarettes?

Just when we feel good that there are strong preventive health campaigns targeted at reducing teen cigarette smoking in this country, we learn about electronic cigarettes gaining in popularity in young people around the world. These are battery-powered smoking devices that deliver nicotine without smoke and are unfortunately being used more and more overseas as typified in a study from Poland we are releasing this week by Goniewicz and Zielinska-Danch. (doi: 10.1542/peds.2011-3448). The authors surveyed more than 20,000 students in Polish high schools and universities and learned that almost a quarter of them had tried electronic cigarettes. Just what the factors are that contribute to using this device is awaiting your perusal by reading the data and demographics contained in this article — one that will charge you up to hopefully work to prevent these devices from gaining the same traction in this country that they seem to be gaining in others.Digg this
