Common Kitchen Spice May Help Control PCOS and Improve Fertility

By John Miley

Are you trying to get pregnant and have PCOS? if so, you must know about this simple kitchen spice. If you have PCOS, you know it can signal other health issues if not controlled - health issues such as pre-diabetes, diabetes, thyroid problems and more.
Furthermore, it can make getting pregnant very difficult for some women, and nearly impossible for others.
Don't despair, there are some things you can do (before you go on a pharmaceutical drug) to regulate PCOS.
Stable blood sugar and insulin levels has a positive effect on PCOS. Eating complex carbohydrates, grass-fed proteins and vegetables is a helpful step in managing PCOS as is the addition of this simple kitchen spice:
If you are interested in including a spice that can help stabilize blood sugar, consider using cinnamon daily (1 Tablespoon) mixed into your daily diet. You can try taking a teaspoon of cinnamon before meals, or drink it as a tea 30 minutes before you eat.
Properties in cinnamon help regulate blood sugar and can moderate the insulin response your body has toward blood glucose--and when your insulin is regulated, PCOS tends to improve
Other helpful considerations you can use to regulate and control PCOS naturally:
-Eat plenty of antioxidant rich foods (blueberries, greens, red and orange veggies) as they fight inflammation that can worsen PCOS.
-Relieve stress. Go on long walks. Get out the fresh air and move your body. Exercise is a great help in regulating PCOS.
-Try acupuncture and acupressure. Studies conducted in Europe suggest that 33% of the women with PCOS treated with acupucture noticed restored and normal ovulation.
-Balance your blood glucose (blood sugar) and insulin with a diet rich in omega-3 proteins, plant-based low in complex carbohydrates. You can even experiment with eliminating grains altogether to see how your PCOS responds to this change.
These tips can get you pointed in the right direction, so give them a try. Small changes in your daily lifestyle choices can often yield big results.

Fertility Drugs - Dangerous in Higher Doses

I could totally relate to the following article.  This woman had hyperstimulation of her ovaries after being given higher doses of fertility drugs.  I also had that condition and it's painful and uncomfortable.  It can also be life threatening if not treated.  The woman mentioned in this article had to be hospitalized for her condition and, like me, decided enough was enough.  Read more:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/17/health/research/high-doses-of-hormones-add-to-ivf-complications.html?pagewanted=all

From the article:

It was my first time doing IVF, and I’ll never do it again,” said Ms. Demidon, 28, a quality assurance specialist in Cayuga, N.Y. “It was awful. When you have that much fluid in you, it puts pressure on everything.”
OHSS is a little-known complication of fertility treatments that rely on high doses of hormones, which are standard in the United States and the United Kingdom; the syndrome is not the only health problem to be linked to in vitro fertilization. Fertility clinics in Europe and Japan have turned to a safer, low-dose form of IVF, but clinics here have largely resisted on the grounds that the success rates for low-dose IVF are not as high...
... And experts have debated for decades whether IVF contributes to an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer; studies have reached conflicting conclusions. Lupron, used to suppress the ovaries, has raised concerns as well. The drug is approved to treat prostate cancer; its use in IVF is off-label (meaning it is not FDA-approved for this purpose). Thousands of women have reported adverse reactions, including memory loss, liver disorders, bone loss and severe muscle, joint and bone pain, said Marcy Darnovsky, associate executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society, a public interest group in Berkeley, Calif. “Lots of drugs are used off-label, but is this use appropriate?” said Ms. Darnovsky. “Considering the number of women who’ve taken these drugs over the past 25 years, you’d think much more rigorous studies and analysis would have been done on them.”

Zinc May Be Critical For Embryo Formation

I've written before about the importance of zinc for fertility. This article talks about how an egg needs zinc to become fertilized and become an embryo. Although this study was not done on humans, it's probably good to make sure your diet includes zinc rich foods. Read more:

From the article:

Northwestern scientists, working with mice, discovered the egg becomes ravenous for zinc and acquires a 50 percent increase in the metal in order to reach full maturity before becoming fertilized. The flood of zinc appears to flip a switch so the egg can progress through the final stages of meiosis. Meiosis is when the egg sheds all but one copy of its maternal chromosomes before it can be fertilized by a sperm and become an embryo.

"Zinc helps the egg exit from a holding pattern to its final critical stage of development," said O'Halloran, the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern. "It's on the knife's edge of becoming a new life form or becoming a cell that dies. It only has 24 hours. Zinc seems to be a key switch that helps control whether the egg moves forward in its development stage. "

Woman Lowers FSH From 25 to 8 With Reflexology

Here is an amazing article about a woman who had high FSH and was told that doing IVF would be a waste of time. She underwent some treatments of reflexology and her FSH went from 25 down to 8. Although the fertility community may be skeptical of this treatment, the woman in the article is convinced that her reflexology treatments made the difference. If you're interested, I address how you can perform reflexology on yourself in my DVD, Fertility Bodywork.

From the article:

Doctors had told them Mrs Chapman had a hormone problem which meant fertility treatment would be a waste of time.

But the 40- year-old mother remembered she had read somewhere that reflexology could help with infertility.

With nothing to lose, she had three months of foot massage and, at the end of her course, was delighted to hear that her hormone levels had returned to normal.

She soon became pregnant and gave birth to second son Fraser five months ago. While doctors insist there is nothing to prove the alternative therapy was responsible, she is sure it worked.

Mrs Chapman, who also has a four-year-old son called Jake, said: 'I am convinced I wouldn't have become pregnant without the reflexologist's help. I was absolutely shocked, but obviously delighted, to find I was pregnant after being told we couldn't have a second child. It's a dream come true.'

Mrs Chapman, from Deepcar, Sheffield, said she was 'devastated' to be told she would never conceive again.

'I was told that there was no point in attempting IVF treatment because it would be a waste so I would have to resign myself to the fact that we couldn't have another baby,' she added. A hormone test - which indicates if a woman is entering the menopause - showed levels were too high, suggesting her ovaries had stopped producing enough oestrogen, which controls the reproductive cycle.

To become pregnant, a woman needs a hormone rating of ten or below but Mrs Chapman's was above 25. Following reflexology, however, it dropped to below eight.

' I told the doctors about the reflexology but they dismissed it and just said it was possible that hormone levels can drop when you become more relaxed and less anxious.

'The effect of the reflexology was amazing. It seemed to relax me so much. I became pregnant quite quickly and everything went smoothly. The doctors never admitted that the reflexology had anything to do with it but I have no doubt at all.'

The Race To Get Pregnant

Doesn't it feel like a race sometimes? I recall when I ran a women's infertility support group, most people sheepishly admitted they felt like they were competing with others when it came to who could get pregnant first. Your self esteem takes a beating when you can't get your body to "perform" and it seems like slap in the face when others get pregnant before you. One member said, "I definitely want to get pregnant before my sister who is getting married next month" as if she was going to be humiliated if she couldn't "outperform" her.

Well...I have one thing to say...take yourself out of the race...it only adds stress to an already overly-stressed situation - and stress will only get in your way of getting pregnant.

So how do you get yourself out of the "race" mindset?

1. Remember, babies come on their own schedule...not out of your need to feel like you're getting ahead of others.

2. Just because someone had a baby before you - it doesn't mean they're better or more worthy...they're just on a different schedule.

3. Now that I have my daughter, I'm glad I had her when I did...if I had her when we first started trying to get pregnant, she'd be well into the higher grades of elementary school by now. I'm enjoying every minute. Most people my age are going through the trauma of watching their kids move away from home or going to college...I have many years of fun ahead of me.

5. The way I see it, for every week, month, and year I waited for my daughter to come into my life, that's how much more I enjoy being with her. I don't think I could have ever appreciated what a miracle the whole process of pregnancy and childbirth is if I had gotten pregnant on my first try (or if I had a baby in my 20's).

6. It seems like whenever I've been envious or jealous of someone else, I later find out that they've struggled as much or more than me it some part of their life. What appeared to be a charmed life wasn't so perfect afterall. Maybe they had an easier time getting pregnant, but there are many phases of life and many twists and turns along the way.
